Well well well, I remember perfectly how I got this album. It was the very
first time I went out on a metal shop by my own, wanting to buy a killer album
to impress my older brother Danny, I must have been 15 at the time. So I went
to my brother's favorite (and only specialized in metal) shop in Geneva, and
I asked the boss to give me something similar to Bon Jovi. He handed over me
a vinyl of this album, I looked at it, loved the artwork and color right away
and decided to buy it without even trying it. It was the very first Metal album
I bought on my own, and I must say that I was more than satisfied when I arrived
home and played it over my brother's Vinyl player. Danny on the other hand did
never dig Magnum... I still don't know why, maybey because even for a Hard Rock
band, Magnum always had this little progressive touch.
This album is a pure wonder of melodic and atmospheric Hard-Rock. The guitars
are wonderfull, crying with such a warm sound, then delivering a very emotional
sound. Magnum' singer is simply amazing, not only technically, but his voice
is one on a million, very warm, very deep, mystical... I was indeed under the
charm of this band right after the first listen of this album, I then bought
all the other Magnum's record I could get my hands on it, not ignoring the budget,
since I was going to school and didn't have any revenue. It took me many skipped
meals to get almost all Magnum CDs :), but it was worth it. Magnum was my favorite
band at the time, next to Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. This CD contains so many
killer tracks, like Days Of No Trust, Start Talking Love, Different Worlds,
Pray For The Day or the excellent progressive Don't Wake The Lion,
but actually all songs are excellent ones. The keyboards are wonderful, they
add the right amount of atmosphere to Magnum's songs and accentuate the emotional
side of the songs. What I always love in Magnum songs are choruses : very catchy
with usually very deep vocals on which you can sense the exact emotion for each
songs.
It may not be very agressive for nowadays metalheads :), but it sure brings
back a lot of memories and I find Magnum to be one of the greatest Hard Rock
band ever, and their songs are timeless to me. The more I listen to it, the
more I love, even today. An amazing album, from an amazing band. If you like
calm and melodic Hard Rock, then you definitely want to check out Magnum ! Let's
all spread our wings to heaven !
