Killing songs: a good few moments then and there...
Well, I received this demo of the guitarist Pete Wilkinson, and I decided to
give it a try. Lets get one thing clear though, the production doesn't exist
!!!! I understand its a demo, but it feels like its been recorded in the room
next door (or even the next) and that's unfortunate cause it takes away the
pleisure to listen to it (it really does !).
So musically speaking, Pete can play fiercly fast on his guitar, but it tends
to get way to technical rather than melodic. He shows moments where he doesn't
try to break a record in speed (like M. Malmsteen for instance who's only way
to have an orgasm is to play 25 notes of music in under a second.... anyway)
and these are the best moments, unfortunately they are only a few.
So despite the total absence of production, they are some interesting moments,
but they are interspersed with too many indifferent (to me) fast playing, too
technical moments. Let me explain, first of all this speed competition, this
complexity is far too pushed for me to really enjoy it as melodic music, it
would be more of a technical demonstration... unfortunately Pete's out of tempo
sometimes (no wonder at that speed !) and there's also some mistake then and
there (no production). Plus the rest of the music, drums programming and keyboards
are also taken care by Pete and the problem is that you can't do everything
by yourself, and that kind of music (instrumental) requires that the other instruments
(usually drums and keyboard) help the general feeling of the music, here they're
only here to say there's something else than guitars.
So, I decided not to quote that demo, simply because its impossible to hear
it more than once because of its lack of production. I'd just say that Pete
can play very fast, but he doesn't impress me because these moments lack personality...
So the guy can play guitar, that's for sure and I'm sure he's talentuous, but
still I would suggest him to try to get more melodic and less technical, that way
his music would be more enjoyable and accessible by more people, but that's my
humble opinion.
