Killing songs: Only the Sigh
Human Bodies and Leather Chalice are two names in metal that have only recently come to my attention. Human Bodies began as a two piece band, using computer drums, but since then has grown. On the other end of this split is Leather Chalice, a punkier black metal band consisting of one man for the project, Jann from Ramlord. Human Bodies fills the air with much hate with their style of black metal, while Leather Chalice drives on influences from such bands as Venom and Discharge, but more importantly flows with a more depressive and desolate tone. Human Bodies begins the first half of this short split and is the most energetic portion. Only the Sigh is an angrier side of black metal, feeling very melodic and reminding me a bit of Dark Fortress’ album Ylem. Malice Prepense remains true to the hate filled atmosphere from the opening track, feeling a little less violent, but still getting across a malicious tone. The second half, comprising of Leather Chalice, is rawer in sound, integrating a much more miserable tone that leaves a feeling of hopelessness. Leather Chalice pours on both raw black metal and a punkish attitude to create an interesting blend of music. Though Human Bodies is the more interesting band to delve into here in comparison to Leather Chalice, they both create a split that is both hate filled and melancholic all-in-one.
