Killing songs: Tonight
First song, No Turning Away, ends and the only band that comes
to my mind is Europe. Kelly Hansen & Time Donahue have been surely
influenced by Joey Tempest, John Norum & Cie. For sure this type
of metal is not fresh, not new and not really inspired. When I say inspired,
I am talking about the chorus. Where Europe was delivering "knock-your-head"
chorus lines, Into The Line is very tasteless. The song ends and ...
the melodies are also immediately gone from your head.
Don't misunderstand me here: the whole album is cool and I guess the
bet was too high....from the beginning. Too conventional, not enough
emotions. Music is like a good meal: it might have the right ingredients,
some pepper or some salt to spice it up. The recipe here is good, but
the cooker is using a book ... not its imagination. I guess you got
the point.
It is always difficult to recreate Europe's magical music (you said
impossible ... and you're right). It is like doing an AC/DC or an Iron
Maiden record. As I said from the beginning, it was an Impossible Mission
and as I haven't seen Tom Cruise being part of this band....
They are not bad musicians and a couple of riffs or themes are interesting,
but nothing more. Sorry guys, but Europe ... is Europe. The record ends
and I go to my metal collection ... take out The Final Countdown
... and hit the play button. Yes! Europe will always be Europe!
