Killing songs: The Kindness Of Strangers & Onward
When I received this promo, I was really excited to quickly hit the
play button of my cd-player. Why? Because I immediately notice one the
promo that Onward's singer is Michael Grant! This vocalist sings also
in Legend Maker (a fantastic true metal piece released by Sentinel Records
in 1998).
Globally, I appreciated quite much Evermoving. However, the
vocals performances of Michael Grant are much below the one I discovered
on Legend Maker's album. Evermoving consists of eight songs,
featuring both European-Style melody as well as 80's typical American
riff-power.
Basically, fans of melodic power metal stuff will be enchanted by this
debut album, but on the other hand I am a bit afraid this segment of
metal fans get tired with the number of new bands and records in this
category (melodic power metal). The Kindness Of Strangers & Onward
are excellent compos and The Waterfall Enchantress confirms
Onward can still surprises the listener with intelligent song writing.
Between Majestic and Symphony X, Onward is a rocky who will have to
fight hard if they want to conquer the throne. Evermoving contains
interesting moments with fantastic solos, but is also a very conventional
power metal record. At the end, this feeling of "déjà-vu" is predominant
and this is where Onward must work hard: create their own style. Try
before!
