Killing songs: Guardians
One thing I must get off of my chest before
the rest of the review continues, please read the unsigned / independent
bands reviews. By doing so you will help out the underground metal scene
tremendously and think about it, even Helloween started
somewhere. If you see a review of an unsigned band that sounds like it
might interest you, c'mon man send em the five bucks for their three track
cd or at the very least download them. Please, support the underground
metal scene buy / trade demos!. Anyways, foreword aside, this week I am
reviewing France's Eternal Flight with their self titled
four song demo.
The first track here is a short "obligitory instrumental intro"
track, which on an album helps create mood but on a demo I just see it
as a waste of space and could have been used for another song. To me,
a demo should be around 4-8 tracks, NO "obligitory instrumental intro"
songs, NO instrumetnals, make the demo consist of your speedy most powerful
numbers and maybe at the end have a well done ballad. For a prime example
on how to do a demo check out Thunderstone's five song
demo (also reviewed here on metalreviews). Alright well back to Eternal
Flight. The first real song on here comes in the form of Beyond
(the Golden Gate). It's fairly typical Power Metal, played a bit
slower but still has the double bass, and the vocals are fairly good here
as well. The song lacks a strong, catchy chorus though and because of
this it suffers a great deal, the guitar solo though salvages this weak
spot a little bit but not all the way. The next song Back Into the
Light (Renaissance) is a slower mid tempo track with the keys being
placed more up front. The singing is also more restrained and the vocals
sound alot better. However despite this improvement Eternal Flight
have yet to give me a song that has a catchy STRONG chorus, once again
despite the good music being played this kinda seems to drag on for awhile.
The final track Guardians (no its not a Helloween
cover) is the stronger of the three full songs mainly because it has some
memorable chantlike prechoruses which make it memorable. Guardians
is also a midtempo type song but there arent many keyboards its mainly
guitar driven. One other thing I must mention, around the two minute mark
the vocals become very strong and powerfully sung.
Well, all in all Eternal Flight is a straightforward a little
above average demo. It sounds very raw and rough and in some spots even
a bit unfocused. This wont srike you in the face with its greatness but
Id suggest checking this band out if you like "raw" Power Metal.
