Killing songs: Payback, High Octane, Edge Of Tomorrow, Soul Reaper, Torn Apart & Gladiator.
An interesting band adding themselves to the long list of True Metal acts.
A list growing rapidily since a few years, and although there's a lot of concurrence,
only a few can survive out there. I must say that this album is a surprise,
and a damn good one.
The album starts with an orchestral intro that could easily be in a movie,
with a cool moody atmosphere. Then the album jumps right away on the band entitled
song Guardians Of Time, a nice True Metal hymn, but maybe too cliché
for my taste with a too simple chorus vocal melody and medium choirs. Strangely
that first song is probably the weakest track on the album. But right away it
helps into getting the feeling about the band's inspiration. I'd say that the
Hammerfall inspiration is pretty strong musically, with very powerful
and square riffs. The weakness of the band is probably their singer, he's not
bad per say, but he need to improve his vocals to follow the powerful music
overall that the band demonstrate. I might be wrong but I believe he tries to
sing like Tobias Sammet, and I wouldn't be surprise if he was one of his source
of inspiration. They also remind me Storyteller, which even though also
highly inspired from HF too : they also play a heavier True Metal. The
band demonstrate a great musical performance and the guitar riffs and solos
are really excellent. Also adding an important touch to the overall : the drummer
is fast and furious and plays with brio ! The band may not have invented anything,
but they deliver an excellent True Metal with original vocal melodies and catchy
songs.
Songs like High Octane or Soul Reaper are definite killers, with
extremely melodic guitars in front, heavy riffing in the back and a great chorus.
After all that has been done in the True Metal leagues I must admit that I'm
very happy to find songs like these ! If you like melodic guitar then you'll
love the album entitled track Edge Of Tomorrow, with it's furious riffs
and excellent guitar melodies and solos. In the end the killer tracks will rumble
one after the other until the album ends. My only complain is that the end of
the album tends to repeat itself with almost always the same riffs and melodies.
The more I listen to the more I like it. It smells Hammerfall all over
but I don't care at all, after all what better inspiration can a True Metal
band have ? I believe that some progress on vocals might help the band to stand
out of this already crowded scene. If you're into True Metal, you definitely
want to check out this very good debut album (I think) from Guardians Of
Time, a very talented formation indeed. A very nice surprise.
