Killing songs: The whole record
The "inventor" of the gothic metal phenomenon returns with
Believe In Nothing and as usual with Paradise Lost since Draconian
Time, the whole metal scene (mags, zine, musicians,...) is talking,
judging, evaluating comparing, criticizing their new work. Of course,
the fact that this band started ten years ago by playing death metal
and is today playing a kind of Depeche Mode metal could be one of
the reason why this band fascinate so many people.
Paradise Lost continue to follow its own path and after Host (the
electro record also called the treacherous album by the last die hard
fans), everybody thought Paradise Lost will continue the "pop"
way and that the last "metal elements" present on Host
would be definitively erased. Not at all!!! Guitars are back and the
vocals are better than ever. Of course, the electro elements are still
there, but this time they amplify the overall. A kind of a mixture
between One Second & Host.
I fall in love with this band on Draconian Time. I didn't
like what was done before by the band, so I do not consider myself
as a die hard fan. Indeed, I have joined the circle very lately, but
today I consider this band as a genius mutant in the history of the
music. Between Depeche Mode, The Beatles or U2, I think Paradise Lost
deserve more attention from the metal kids and from the pop media.
Believe it or not ... that's exactly the opposite that seems to take
place since One Second. Who said paradoxical?
I would be very short on my review, because this record KILLS once
again. Much better compare to Host, much more "metal"
and much more melodic, Believe In Nothing is full of melodies
and hits. I Am Nothing, Mouth or Look At Me Now (I can already
ear the comparison with U2) are already classics and even though die
hard fans have turn their back since many years now, Paradise Lost
knows who are their "new die hard fans". I know it too.
We could talk hours about the cover art, but I think every fan will
find a message based on its own life's experience. If there are some
fans of U2, Depeche Mode out there reading this lines and are also
fans of metal, this Believe In Nothing is a must. If there
are some fans out there who like this band from Draconian Time
and like also One Second, this one is also for you. And
who give a shit what will say the others...
